As the coronavirus continues to disrupt our daily lives, you may be wondering if it is safe to take service calls or how to approach it. Home maintenance can’t just stop because we are practicing social distancing. However, you can still accept service calls and practice proper safety measures to ensure everyone’s health!
Dry Basement® Foundation Repair is an essential business and is ready to serve the community so we can assist you in urgent problems, such as water in your basement, foundation repairs, and basement waterproofing.

Now, if you do need to make a service call, you still can. Here are some quick tips on how to handle welcoming a repairman, contractor, or handyman into your home.
Tip #1: Scheduling a Visit
When scheduling a service call, there are a few things you can do to keep both you and your contractor safe. First and foremost, please do not schedule any visits if you or someone in your home are sick or are quarantining due to potential exposure. The safety of our workers depends on your honesty.
Second, be sure to ask the service provider what steps they are taking to protect its customers and employees. You can ask for things such as:
- Maintaining proper distance during the visit
- Touch-free transactions
- Disinfectant for tools
- Limiting the number of installers
- Wearing face masks and surgical gloves
Be sure to clarify your expectations before anyone arrives so you know what to expect from each other.
Tip #2: Prep Your Home
There are a few simple steps you can take to prepare for a visit from a service provider.
- Wipe door handles clean anywhere a worker may need access
- You can also leave interior doors open and lights on to reduce surfaces they need to touch
- Move furniture or other items that are in the area where the work is to be done
- Prep a sink they can use with easy access to wash their hands
- Clean the area they will be working in. You could also cover the area in a drop cloth if wanted
Tip #3: During the Visit
Be sure to maintain a proper distance at all times. You can greet the service worker outside or back away from the door so they can let themselves in as you step back. Show them where their area of work is and keep your distance. You could sit in the backyard or even take a walk, whatever you feel comfortable with.
If you are leaving a tip, do so with care. See if you can leave a tip electronically or put cash in a sealed envelope for them to take. Another great way to show your appreciation is by leaving a nice review online.
Tip #4: After the Visit
Clean the area where the contractor was working, ideally in a 6-foot radius, and with a proper disinfectant. Be sure to wash your hands afterward or a few times during cleaning if needed.
