Critters in crawl space
When a crawl space isn't properly encapsulated, it is left open to the outside world. This means that critters will be able to get inside and cause problems. Most homeowners are uncomfortable with the idea of animals taking up residence underneath their homes, as they should be. It is very dangerous to have some of these pests living here, and it can cause a variety of issues for the entire home.
Crawl spaces that don't have any kind of vapor barrier, liner, or seal in place can also let in a lot of moisture. When this happens, it will cause wooden materials to rot, warp, deteriorate, and decay. This can be very inviting to all types of animals, including termites, roaches, snakes, spiders, rats, mice, skunks, squirrels, moles, mosquitoes, ticks, and to other animals, nobody wants living underneath their home. These critters go through their entire life cycle here, from birth to death, and needless to say, this can have an influence on a home's indoor air quality. Dying animals and just critters living here, in general, can cause the first and second floor of a home to smell bad. This is not air that you want to breathe in.
Also, the damaged wooden materials can ruin the structural integrity of a home. Damaged wooden floor joists can also cause certain areas of the first floor to sag or be unlevel in some spots. These issues can all be taken care of through proper crawl space encapsulation. We have a team of certified waterproofing professionals on our staff who will come to your home, look at the crawl space thoroughly to see what kind of animals are present, and then they will walk you through the repair and encapsulation process. It will involve the installation of the DryShield® vapor barrier, as well as perhaps a dehumidifier for humidity control, and a sump pump for extra protection against water seepage during a heavy rainfall or when there is excessive snow melt on the lawn. The encapsulation process is fairly quick and installation of the various products is completed by trained professionals.
